Roadtrip: Day 2

Day 2, guys!! Not yet halfway and we're starting to feel the drive in our bones. Not sure if that makes sense actually. Basically we both can't quite shake the sensation that we're constantly moving, even when we're not. Like jet lag, but car lag. Best way I can explain it!

We started day 2 early, up before the sun! We had some (questionable) breakfast at the hotel grabbed some iced coffee then headed right back into the Indiana farmland. How can there be so many farms??! We were on the road about 1/2 hour when we realized the time had changed over and we had gained an hour. So we started our drive at 7:30, then it was 8am, then it was 7am. SO WEIRD! We freaked out about this for a little bit actually because it was really quite strange to experience. Now I understand why we change our clocks at 2am - if you did it in the middle of the day that would be way too strange, you'd really have to be sitting down. We took a route that would get us around Chicago so we wouldn't have to drive through the city traffic and then, of course, we get stuck in traffic trying to bypass traffic! ba-dum-bum.

We tried to play the license plate game, but didn't finish the whole alphabet today (we got stuck on 'J', where are all the 'J's??). We'll pick it up tomorrow. We drove through Illinois.... farm, farm, construction, farm, farm, traffic, farm, farm.... then we left Illinois. LOL (there's a 60cent toll to leave the state... big bucks, kids!)

We noticed some ominous dark clouds up ahead, but didn't think much of it. Little did we know we were driving directly towards those clouds and the storm it brought with it. We passed more cornfields than people and cars combined (and still no 'J'). The transition from clouds up ahead to "whoa, it just got really dark" and then to "we need to pull of the road immediately because we can't see 10ft in front of us' took about 5 minutes. It was that quick! We had to pull off in a tiny town in Wisconsin because visibility was dangerously non-existent. Serena got soaked from the rain while trying to fill up the car with gas but we did get to pull into a Starbucks while we waited out the monsoon. She ordered a fancy drink that I can't remember but I did hear "...and 5 shots of espresso." Hello! We buzzed right on through Wisconsin and into Minnesota on that caffeine kick.

Speaking of buzzing.... I can't be sure, but it's very possible that close to 60% of the bug population in Wisconsin landed on our front window and died. Very sad. But also very, very, very gross. In some of the pictures, you'll see a beautiful view of the road in front of us, gorgeous clouds, lush greenery, a farm house here and there and then you'll notice a blurry spot right in the middle right of the shot.... that's a bug (or bugs). The joys of life on the open road!

And now we're comfortably resting in my dearest Emily's apt. Emily was my roommate one year in college and she so wonderfully offered to host us tonight. The comfort of being in a 'home' vs. a hotel is indescribable. So beyond perfect! We enjoyed a fresh home cooked meal, some wine and coconut water and very soon... dessert!

On the agenda tomorrow.... South Dakota. Woohoo!! It will be another long day but we have 2 long stretches of road that will carry us the whole way there, we have snacks and we have to find that 'J'!! Cross your fingers for no more rain.
