Roadtrip: Day 3

WOOHOO, the end of day 3 has arrived! This day is a milestone because it means that we've completed over half of our total journey!! Today's drive was much, much easier than the previous 2 days. It was basically one monstrous stretch of road that we were on straight for 400 miles. No turns, no exits, no stopping.... just driving straight. The challenge was keeping ourselves entertained, no easy task! (we found the 'J', we're now on the hunt for Q but this game is quickly getting dull... lol).

We got another early start to the day, said some quick goodbyes to Em before heading out in search of some coffee. Stumbled upon a delicious bagel shop and had a wonderfully filling breakfast and some strong coffee. The bagels were so good that we went back and got 2 more for snacking later on. I got in a little nap at the start of the drive which was the first time I've napped at any point on the trip. It was lovely!

We were back in the cornfields today as we finished off our drive through Minnesota. South Dakota proved to have a much more interesting and beautiful terrain. It started off very flat and with lots of corn (the image of thousands and thousands of corn stalks may be permanently burned into the back of my eyelids). But then it became this very beautiful prairie type of setting. Really gorgeous and picturesque. It was like driving through a postcard. Suddenly where there was once corn was now cows and small hills for days and days.

The prairie turned into the Badlands, or maybe the Badlands are prairies? We were very confused. But the idea of badlands kept making me think of the elephant graveyard from the Lion King. This was nothing like that (less dark, no bones....), but just as deserted. Part of the reason the license plate game is so hard is because there are noooooooo cars. In addition to no cars, Serena and I stumbled upon a vast part of the world that has yet to discover the joys of a cellphone tower or two. no reception for hours!

After many many many hours in South Dakota we finally arrived at our hotel. Success!! We grabbed food then headed 30 minutes down the road to Mt. Rushmore while the sun was still out. I was not so excited to see this but it was actually quite beautiful. We both enjoyed it until it started to rain on us and quickly turned super cold. The low temp tonight is gonna be 48ยบ, yikes! I'm not ready for that yet!

We're both extremely exhausted so we've decided that we need 10 hours of sleep tonight in order to conquer our 10 hour drive tomorrow, our longest drive yet. Wish us luck!!

Love to you all!
